Mike was brought up in the Republic of Ireland in a large Catholic family with connections to paramilitary organisations. His understanding of God in his younger years was as a "cosmic monster" - someone to be afraid of rather than a friend or loving father. After going through some difficult and dangerous situations, as well experiencing personal problems in his life, Mike tells how it was probably his fear of God, and the potential consequences of purgatory and hell, that kept him from suicide.
